Pictured above: Tokyo, Japan, number 10 on our top list of international cities ranked by number of U.S industry sponsored trials hosted in 2016.

The pharmaceutical industry is a giant web of sponsors, researchers, suppliers, physicians, software vendors… the list goes on. When so many job roles representing dozens of companies can be involved with a single project, it’s no surprise that this industry still relies on face to face meetings. It’s that personal touch that can make you and your team standout from the crowd. That's why relationship building is such a vital skill to have as a biopharma professional.

Because of this, key members at trial sponsors often manage business by traveling the world. We ran the numbers and found that the 3,999 U.S. originated industry sponsored studies that have started in 2016 to date have 18,203 active trial sites across 117 countries.

We wanted to know where US sponsors are spending their travel budget this year. We did this using TrialFinder to see which cities in the world have hosted the most U.S originated "industry sponsored" trials (as labeled on ClinicalTrials.gov) in 2016 to date.

First I’ll share the top 5 which, surprise surprise, are in the US. What's more interesting are the top 10 cities outside the US, which we also share here in a list.

For each city listed we show the number of trials hosted by local trial sites, and the total percentage of 2016 U.S. industry sponsored trials that city represents. The total dataset contains 3,999 trials, 18,203 trial sites, 117 countries, and 4,339 cities. I can personally show you how I ran this analysis in under 15 minutes when you sign up for a demonstration of TrialFinder.
